Digital Fluency Intensive 2020 Week Two

My learning today (in bullet points)

  • Google Hangouts
  • Google Keep - (photo of text)
  • Gmail
  • Google Translate
  • Calendar organisation & shortcuts (use '?' to find shortcuts)
  • Setting up google hangout through calendar
  • Taming tabs (Toby mini, One Tab)
  • Create google hangout recordings

My understanding has deepened of the Manaiakalani pedagogy around the idea of the learn section of the 'Learn, Create, Share' model. Learn really meaning 'AKO', the reciprocity of teaching and learning together. The learn is based around teacher actions from the NZC to promote student learning and to make accelerated progress to sit above the norm. To see this accelerated progress in our classrooms it is important for the below learning to be seen and happening in the learning environment.

  • Authentic learning (real text for example, newspaper, articles, e.t.c)
  • sharing ideas (discussions)
  • thinking critically
  • Collaborating and making choices
Learn: Connected, Ubiquitous, Visible, Empowered.

Effective practise in our school looks like collaborating on tasks. We often work with the senior classroom (year 4 - 8) and work on authentic hands on learning. We have used School Kits that connect to our inquiry and often to our local environment. We have begun T-shaped learning and are focusing on the environment.

Turbo Charge

I learnt lots that could improve my confidence, capability and workflow as a professional.

ctrl # (number) to open a tab that has just been closed down. I learnt lots of shortcuts. The calendar, emails and tab taming will make organisation and planning much easier and help with efficiency.

I would like to use Google Hangouts in the classroom with the whole school. I could use it to share with Google Maps and ideas to engage learners.

Using Google Calendar effectively will help my confidence, capability and workflow in my personal life. I can also sync all accounts.

  1. Evening Janelle, I like the Learn section of today as the idea of using technology to enhance learning not just a tool to research is totally mind blowing. Ctrl shift T will open a tab you have shut, ctrl number will move you to that tab that is already open. Hope this stops any confusion.

  2. Thanks for posting your thoughts Janelle. The LEARN part of the Manaiakalani pedagogy is such an important place to start and recognise that we really are effective teachers with new opportunities for us to amplify and turbocharge our delivery. Google Hangouts & calendar and being able to tame those tabs will allow you to be so much more smarter with your time. Good on you for trying them out.

  3. Kia ora Janelle.
I hope you are enjoying this new online learning. Manaiakalani is looking into starting up Cohort 2 of the DFI online in a couple of weeks. I hope you will take this opportunity to rejoin. While you won't be expected to start until the third week, it would be beneficial to come in from the beginning to reconnect with the content, as there has been so much happening since we last met up face to face. There will be more information to follow shortly, so please consider this a heads up. I look forward to catching up with you again soon.
