Digital Fluency Intensive 2020 Week Two

My learning today (in bullet points)

  • Google Hangouts
  • Google Keep - (photo of text)
  • Gmail
  • Google Translate
  • Calendar organisation & shortcuts (use '?' to find shortcuts)
  • Setting up google hangout through calendar
  • Taming tabs (Toby mini, One Tab)
  • Create google hangout recordings

My understanding has deepened of the Manaiakalani pedagogy around the idea of the learn section of the 'Learn, Create, Share' model. Learn really meaning 'AKO', the reciprocity of teaching and learning together. The learn is based around teacher actions from the NZC to promote student learning and to make accelerated progress to sit above the norm. To see this accelerated progress in our classrooms it is important for the below learning to be seen and happening in the learning environment.

  • Authentic learning (real text for example, newspaper, articles, e.t.c)
  • sharing ideas (discussions)
  • thinking critically
  • Collaborating and making choices
Learn: Connected, Ubiquitous, Visible, Empowered.

Effective practise in our school looks like collaborating on tasks. We often work with the senior classroom (year 4 - 8) and work on authentic hands on learning. We have used School Kits that connect to our inquiry and often to our local environment. We have begun T-shaped learning and are focusing on the environment.

I learnt lots that could improve my confidence, capability and workflow as a professional.

ctrl # (number) to open a tab that has just been closed down. I learnt lots of shortcuts. The calendar, emails and tab taming will make organisation and planning much easier and help with efficiency.

I would like to use Google Hangouts in the classroom with the whole school. I could use it to share with Google Maps and ideas to engage learners.

Using Google Calendar effectively will help my confidence, capability and workflow in my personal life. I can also sync all accounts.

Digital Fluency Intensive 2020 Week One

The pedagogy behind the Manaiakalani Trust was interesting. I was surprised to learn the trust began in 2006, when technology in the classroom was still relatively new and not as commonly used. A group of principals and teachers from Auckland gathered together as there was a gap in literacy and a new approach to teaching was needed. This is where the 'Learn, Create, Share' model was introduced that is used in Manaiakalani classrooms today. Due to base line data that has been collected early the trust was able to show the accelerated learning from children within the clusters and research groups.

What I got out of the one day session today makes me exciting to have another eight weeks. I learnt how to use google docs effectively and use numerous shortcuts that I weren't aware of. I will bring voice to text into the classroom for writing and set my children up in Hapara with folders and documents that will set up their learning. I am looking forward to exploring the extensions and add-ons available through google drive.

A thoroughly enjoyable day of learning!
